This training contains the essential theory and special procedures allowing the student to understand coding and medical insurance policies for various healthcare companies…. It prepares the student for a career in the medical field as a medical billing and coding specialist. Medical terminology, ICD-9, CPT and HCPC are essential components of this program. Students must be able to demonstrate good skills in the classroom and at the clinical site with a view toward passing the National Certification Examination. Prerequisite:

High School Diploma or GED and/or 6 months of experience as a healthcare paraprofessional.

Course Objective

This course focuses on established medical diagnosis and procedural coding systems including a study of nomenclature versus classification systems, basic coding principles, and application of coding guidelines in outpatient and inpatient settings. It includes medical insurance billing theory and methodology, and covers specific reimbursement theories, health care concepts, and the practical application of third-party insurance rules. To qualify for graduation from this program the students must demonstrate competency in each of the skills and successfully complete the externship. Graduates in this program will be qualified to take the CMB National Exam and qualify to find entry-level positions in laboratories, hospitals, and clinics.
