The Dialysis Technician program is a comprehensive program designed to prepare the graduate to become a Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician. Students will learn various needed skills, including phlebotomy, venipuncture, and patient care as it relates to dialysis, as well as other skills required to become Certified. Dialysis technicians are also referred to as Renal Dialysis Technicians, Hemodialysis Technicians, or Nephrology Technicians. Graduates in this program will be qualified to take the CCHT National Exam, and typically work under the supervision of physicians, primarily in hospitals and clinics.

Tasks may include the following:

  • Managing machines that filter waste and excess fluids from the blood of patients whose kidneys are no longer able to perform these essential functions.
  • Gaining a comprehensive understanding of how kidney dialysis machines function. Dialysis Technicians are tasked with operating, cleaning, and sterilizing the equipment. Additionally, they must be well-versed in meeting the specific individual needs of their patients.
  • Monitoring and recording weight and vital signs before, during, and after the blood cleansing procedures. Additionally, Dialysis Technicians instruct patients about in-home treatments. Because dialysis technicians work with blood, they must exercise strict safety precautions against infectious diseases such as hepatitis and AIDS.
